Preview Roundups
October 10, 2019
Tampa Bay at Toronto 7:00 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Lightning have had four days to think about an uneven start to the season and captain Steven Stamkos didn’t waste any time trying to light a fire under the 2018-19 Presidents’ Trophy winners, who lost in the first round of the playoffs. Stamkos and the Lightning look to find the form and battle level from last season’s team when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.
Detroit at Montreal 7:00 PM ET
The Montreal Canadiens avoided a regulation loss despite giving up 13 goals during a season-opening, three-game road trip and begin their home slate against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. The Canadiens, who have won nine straight against the Original Six-rival Red Wings, have rallied from multi-goal deficits in each of their contests this campaign but dropped a 5-4 decision in overtime at Buffalo on Wednesday.
Edmonton at New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
The Edmonton Oilers are among the NHL's top offensive teams just over one week into the season, which they've begun with three straight victories for the first time since 2008-09. They look to extend their winning streak when they continue a four-game road trip Thursday against the winless New Jersey Devils.
Anaheim at Pittsburgh 7:00 PM ET
The Anaheim Ducks vie for their first 4-0-0 start in franchise history on Thursday when they play the second contest of their four-game road trip against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Ducks began a season with three wins on two occasions, including their Stanley Cup-winning campaign in 2006-07 in which they overcame a shootout loss in the fourth game to record a point in 16 straight contests (12-0-4).
St. Louis at Ottawa 7:30 PM ET
The St. Louis Blues responded to a season-opening overtime loss by posting back-to-back wins, although each game has been decided by one goal and ended with an identical score. The Blues will look to take advantage of one of the league's lesser weights when they continue a four-game road trip with a visit to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.
Washington at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Washington Capitals recorded their first two wins of the season on the road before failing to hold a third-period lead in both overtime setbacks at home. Coach Todd Reirden's club aims to return to its winning ways away from the nation's capital on Thursday when they open a two-game trek against the Nashville Predators.
Minnesota at Winnipeg 8:00 PM ET
The Winnipeg Jets survived several injuries and a suspension of a key player to split a season-opening four-game road trip and will host the Central Division-rival Minnesota Wild for their home debut Thursday night. The Jets received three goals from a depleted defense corps that was missing Dustin Byfuglien (suspension), Josh Morrissey (upper body), Nathan Beaulieu (upper body) and Dmitry Kulikov (personal leave) in Tuesday’s 4-1 victory at Pittsburgh.
San Jose at Chicago 8:30 PM ET
The San Jose Sharks have matched the worst start in franchise history, losing their first four games for the first time since 1993-94. The Sharks, who advanced to the Western Conference finals last season, will attempt to break into the win column when they wrap up a three-game road trip with a visit to the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.
Calgary at Dallas 8:30 PM ET
The Dallas Stars hope their rough start is behind them as they try for their seventh straight victory over the visiting Calgary Flames on Thursday. Dallas lost its first three games before winning at Washington 4-3 in overtime Tuesday with Stars coach Jim Montgomery telling reporters: "It's funny how games work. That was our worst game of the year, and we got a result. It was good to get the result."
Boston at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
There were plenty of eyes on Patrik Laine after he signed late in training camp following a disappointing season, but the 21-year-old forward is off to a flying start as the Winnipeg Jets head to Chicago to face the Blackhawks on Saturday. Laine has 10 points in his first five games - including a three-point effort at Pittsburgh on Tuesday and Thursday’s two-goal, two-assist output against Minnesota - as Winnipeg has won three of its past four after dropping the season opener.
Boston at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
The Boston Bruins have been unfazed by opening the season with four straight games on the road, grinding out three consecutive victories while allowing a total of four goals. After a run to the Stanley Cup Final last season, the Bruins have not appeared to miss a beat and will look to wrap up a perfect road trip at the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.
Vegas at Arizona 10:00 PM ET
The Arizona Coyotes addressed their scoring troubles in 2018-19 by acquiring six-time 30-goal scorer Phil Kessel in the offseason, but the club has yet to see much in the way of offense in its first two games. With just one goal to their credit, the Coyotes aim to get it in gear on Thursday when they host the Vegas Golden Knights.
