San Jose winger Kevin Labanc scored three minutes into overtime as the Sharks spoiled the Los Angeles Kings' home opener with a 3-2 victory Friday.

Labanc redirected a pass from Logan Couture for the game-winning goal, and Timo Meier and Evander Kane also scored for the Sharks, who took a 2-0 lead in the first period and won the first game of a five-game road trip.

Defenseman Erik Karlsson was also credited with an assist on Labanc's goal, his first point for the Sharks.

Sharks center Joe Thornton received an assist on Meier's goal, the 1,031st assist of his career. Thornton is two short of Mario Lemieux for 11th in league history in career assists. Thornton played his 1,495th game, tied for 20th in league history.

Center Anze Kopitar and winger Tyler Toffoli scored for the Kings, who played without right wing Dustin Brown. Brown suffered a broken finger when he was struck by a Kopitar shot in the final preseason game.

The Kings were 0-for-5 on the power play, and the Sharks were 0-for-3, although one was only for five seconds. The teams were 1-2 in the league on the penalty kill last season.

Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick had 30 saves while making his 10th consecutive season-opening start.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 19 saves in his second start of the season after giving up four goals in 14 shots in a 5-2 loss to Anaheim in their season opener Wednesday.

Meier scored the first goal of the game when he redirected a shot from defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic from the left point at 9:42 of the first period.

Kane made it 2-0 with 6:12 left, beating Quick high on the short side from the right faceoff circle after the Kings could not clear the puck. Joonas Donskoi and rookie Antti Suomela had assists, Suomela's first career point.

Kopitar scored the Kings' first goal at 17:15 of the first period, picking up the puck on the right side of the net after a Derek Forbort shot was deflected.

Toffoli tied the game at 2 just 37 seconds into the second period after a shot by Tanner Pearson was wide left but bounced off the boards behind the net and went to Toffoli on the right side.

Neither team scored in the third period.
