Evgeny Kuznetsov scored with 49 seconds left in overtime, and Alex Ovechkin collected the 600th goal of his NHL career earlier as the Washington Capitals defeated the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Monday night in Washington.

Kuznetsov got a breakaway and beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck (40 saves) with a high shot in an overtime where Washington had all seven shots.

Ovechkin finished with two goals after not scoring a point in the past three games. However, he scored once in each of the first two periods to become the 20th player ever to reach the 600-goal milestone.

In addition, Ovechkin became the fourth NHL player to reach 600 goals in less than 1,000 games - this was the 990th game of his career.

Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull are the others.

Ovechkin also took back the season lead in goals scored. He and Patrik Laine of Winnipeg were tied at 40 before the game, but Ovechkin got his two while Laine scored once, extending his point streak to 12 games.

Laine also was recognized Monday as the NHL's First Star of the Week.

Washington coach Barry Trotz again went with the hot hand in goal as Philipp Grubauer started his third straight game. Grubauer made 26 saves for a second consecutive win..

The victory moved the Capitals back into first place in the Metropolitan Division, one point (85) ahead of the idle Penguins.

Ovechkin's first goal came on a wrist shot from the left side. He took a pass from John Carlson and fired one past Hellebuyck 4:35 into the game.

That goal came on a power play but the Jets needed just 58 seconds to tie the game, thanks to great individual effort from Nikolaj Ehlers.

He picked off a Lars Ellers pass in the neutral zone, broke in alone and then beat Grubauer at 5:33.

Ovechkin then gave Washington the lead with his milestone goal 3:53 into the second period.

There was a loose puck in front after a Tom Wilson shot, and after Hellebuyck momentarily lost his stick, Ovechkin popped it over the prone goalie 3:53 into the period and made history.

Laine tied the game early in the third period.

Winnipeg goalie Steve Mason had arthroscopic surgery on his knee Monday, and the Jets expect he'll be out about 2-3 weeks. The Jets have been hit with numerous injuries, including Mark Scheifele (upper body), who could return later this week or early next week.
