COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Blue Jackets are two contests into a seven-game homestand and wanted to show they were hard to play against in their own arena.

On Saturday, Columbus delivered.

Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson scored and Sergei Bobrovsky had 35 saves to lead the Blue Jackets to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night before a standing room only crowd of 19,143 at Nationwide Arena.

Thomas Vanek scored for Detroit. Petr Mrazek stopped 37 for the Red Wings (22-23-10).

"I thought our whole team game was better," Columbus coach John Tortorella said. "I thought we had a much better (performance) as far as how hard you have to play. Detroit is a good team, it's a fast team. We made a number of mistakes, and Bob bails us out in a few of them. We played with more intensity and the bench was more alive so that's what I'm happy about."

The Blue Jackets (35-14-5) opened the scoring 9:26 into the first period. Columbus' Brandon Dubinsky pushed away Detroit's Dylan Larkin and fired a shot from the blue line that Jenner, positioned inside the left circle, tipped past Mrazek to make it 1-0. It was Jenner's 10th goal of the season.

At 15:06 of the first period, Columbus' David Savard was called for cross-checking Justin Abdelkader and Detroit had the first power play. The Red Wings capitalized 59 seconds in when Henrik Zetterberg passed to Vanek on the right side of the crease and Vanek lifted the puck over Bobrovsky to make it 1-1.

"We've scored (on the power play) in the last little bit," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "We seem to be getting some results. I thought the PP effort was excellent. We won tons of battles, we created lots of chances, we created pressure. That's what we want to do, you're not going to score every time but you want to create pressure and momentum and for the most part we did that."

At 11:27 of the second period, Dubinsky's line produced again. Dubinsky passed to the left across the crease where Jenner and Atkinson were waiting. Both players got a stick on the puck before Atkinson scored from close range.

It was Atkinson's 27th goal of the season, tying a career high the forward set last season.

Dubinsky's assists were his 19th and 20th of the season. He has two goals and five assists in six games since the All-Star break and two goals and four assists in three games against Detroit this season.

"We're getting better and we're getting rewarded," Dubinsky said. "We're bringing pucks to the net and creating a lot more opportunities with our legs and our forechecking."

Detroit pulled Mrazek with 2:05 left but could not produce the tying goal.

"I thought we battled hard," Henrik Zetterberg said. "We kept it simple for the most part. I thought the penalty kill was good, the power play was good. We scored one and created a lot of chances and that created mometum for our team. (Mrazek) was good in net again. We have to take a lot of positives away from this one."

Vanek left the game early in the third (lower body) but returned in the final minutes.

It was the first time that Columbus allowed fewer than two goals in its last 12 games dating to Jan. 17 against Carolina.

The Blue Jackets swept the three-game series against Detroit for the first time in franchise history. Columbus has yet to suffer three consecutive losses this year.

The Blue Jackets held a moment of silence before the start of the game in honor of Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch, who passed away Friday at age 87.
