WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck knows the time will come when a lot more pucks slip behind him.

For now, he'll take as many games as he can get allowing only one.

Hellebuyck stopped 37 shots, including six in overtime, and center Mark Scheifele fired in the winning goal with 20 seconds left in the extra five-minute session to give the Jets a 2-1 victory over the red-hot Washington Capitals on Saturday at the MTS Centre.

Scheifele took a pass from defenseman Jacob Trouba and beat Washington goalie Braden Holtby with a wrist shot for his 10th goal of the season.

The Capitals challenged the play, suggesting Jets right winger Blake Wheeler was offside as Trouba gained the offensive zone. After a delay of more than five minutes, the challenge was dismissed.

Hellebuyck picked up his third consecutive victory in three NHL starts since being recalled from the American Hockey League after starter Ondrej Pavelec was injured Nov. 21 against Arizona.

He earned his first career win, a 3-1 decision over the host Minnesota Wild, on Nov. 27, and was between the pipes in a 6-1 thrashing of the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec 2.

Hellebuyck has surrendered only three goals on 85 shots, and his goals-against average remains at, well, 1.00. Pretty good success to start a career, but can it continue?

"When the team's playing as well as it, let's hope," Hellebuyck said. "I liked that we won, so I hope we continue playing that way."

The Jets (13-12-2) picked up their first overtime victory of the season, and have won three of their last four games.

Winnipeg snapped Washington's six-game winning streak. The Capitals (18-5-2) were 8-1-1 in their last 10 games before arriving in Winnipeg.

Holtby had a super game as well, making 34 saves, but had a personal eight-game winning streak stopped.

Hellebuyck was asked if he viewed the game as a head-to-head battle with one of the game's true greats.

"A lot of people ask that, but I don't think so," he said. "I obviously watch him and I think he's a good goalie and definitely enjoy the battle.

"But I definitely don't see it as a goalie rivalry or anything like that. I just go out and play my own game."

The clubs traded power play goals during regulation play.

Left winger and team captain Andrew Ladd fired his seventh goal of the season with seven seconds left in the first period for the Jets. But Washington center Nicklas Backstrom scored his eighth goal at 14:25 of the second period to tie the score.

After a scoreless third period, the Capitals had six shots in overtime, including a glorious chance on a partial breakaway by left winger Alex Ovechkin, but Hellebuyck turned them aside.

"He's been great," Winnipeg defenseman Tyler Myers said of the 22-year-old goalie. "The one thing you notice is how calm he is, for a young guy.

"All the guys will tell you we think he's the real deal and we'll do our best to limit as many shots as we can on him."

Scheifele had several great scoring chances, finally netting one in overtime. But he said waiting for the officials to make a final call on the play was unsettling, particularly since the Jets had already done some celebrating.

"It's definitely a mood-killer," Scheifele said. "I was pretty jacked up and then I see them challenge it, and then they're looking at it forever.

"So, it definitely kills the mood a little bit, but all in all it's two points."

Washington head coach Barry Trotz seemed convinced the referees got the call wrong.

"We thought it was (offside) when it was originally live and then you look at the three different angles, it's no question," Trotz said. "But, they’ll give you an inconclusive statement, I'm sure, protect their guys, but it is what it is.

"It's flawed a little bit. I mean, they don't want to call that in a hostile building, I'm sure. But you can't have a play like that on a six-inch tablet. You better put it on a big screen and look at it. And then have the people who are making those decisions make that decision. To me, that was a good example of that, so anyways, I don't agree with it."

Trotz needs one victory to get to 621 and pass Bryan Murray for 10th place on the NHL all-time coaching wins list.

Winnipeg finished one-for-five on the power play, while Washington scored on one of four power play opportunities.

Holtby said playing shorthanded four times in the first period had his dynamic club out of sync.

"I think it got us out of our rhythm a little bit, the PKs (penalty kills) and what not," Holby said. "I'm not saying we played a bad game, but we just knew we need to step it up another level if we want to keep winning consistently.

"We take a point, we look at it tomorrow and figure out what we can get better at and move on."

The Jets have only 24 hours to prepare for another difficult test, as they head to Chicago to battle the Blackhawks on Sunday afternoon.

Washington hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night before heading out on another three-game trip.
