Flames 3, Sharks 1: Defenseman Kris Russell ignited a three-goal second period with his first of the season and host Calgary went on to post its eighth win in 10 contests.

Jiri Hudler and Mason Raymond also scored for the Flames, who improved to 4-1-0 on their six-game homestand. Jonas Hiller made 28 saves in his fifth consecutive start as Calgary moved ahead of San Jose for second place in the Pacific Division.

John Scott netted the lone goal for the Sharks, who fell to 1-2-1 in the season series. Alex Stalock turned aside 20 shots as San Jose lost for the second time in their last six road contests.

After a scoreless first period, Calgary got on the board 9:28 into the second as Paul Byron cut across the top of the slot before dropping a pass to Russell, who beat Stalock with a blast from above the left faceoff circle. Hudler doubled the lead during a power play 2:27 later, converting All-Star Johnny Gaudreau's pass from behind the net while on the doorstep.

Raymond made it 3-0 with 1:57 left in the session, one-timing Joe Colborne's feed past Stalock from the right circle. Scott spoiled Hiller's shutout bid at 2:48 of the third, when he buried a loose puck after former Flames defenseman Scott Hannan's pass attempt was deflected.

GAME NOTEBOOK: San Jose D Marc-Edouard Vlasic left the game midway through the second period with an undisclosed injury but returned early in the third. ... Hiller has allowed two goals or fewer in each of his last five outings. ... The Pacific rivals meet for the final time this season Monday in San Jose.
