Sharks 3, Coyotes 2: Defenseman Brenden Dillon scored his first goal of the season early in the third period to snap a tie as visiting San Jose moved into second place in the Pacific Division.

Joe Pavelski converted a power-play chance for his team-leading 22nd goal and Tomas Hertl also scored for the Sharks, who improved to 7-1-3 in their last 11 meetings with Arizona. Logan Couture notched a pair of assists and Antti Niemi finished with 27 saves in the victory.

Mikkel Boedker scored his fourth goal in three contests and captain Shane Doan also tallied for the Coyotes, who have dropped four of their last six. All-Star defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson registered an assist in his 300th career game and Devan Dubnyk turned aside 22 shots.

Stationed along the left wall, Dillon wristed a shot from above the faceoff circle that deflected off Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek's skate and between the pads of Dubnyk at 5:15 of the third to give San Jose a 3-2 lead. Arizona pressed for the equalizer, but Niemi stopped all 10 shots he faced in the final period.

Boedker continued his torrid stretch by using a screen by Kyle Chipchura to beat Niemi at 14:19 of the first period. Pavelski's wrist shot sailed through traffic and past Dubnyk 30 seconds into the middle session and Hertl deflected defenseman Brent Burns' shot 1:03 later, but Doan cleaned up a loose puck on the doorstep at the 11-minute mark to forge a 2-2 tie.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Sharks rookie RW Melker Karlsson saw his five-game goal-scoring streak come to a halt. ... Doan's goal was his 10th, marking the 15th consecutive season in which he has reached double figures. ... Hertl's tally was his first since Dec. 13. ... San Jose's Tyler Kennedy played in his first game since suffering an upper-body injury on Dec. 6 while fellow C Andrew Desjardins missed the contest to be with his wife, Mandy, for the expected birth of the couple's first child.
