Capitals 2, Hurricanes 1: Eric Fehr scored the go-ahead goal with 4:02 remaining in the third period as Washington skated to its fifth straight win in Carolina.

Fourth-liner Jay Beagle also tallied and Braden Holtby finished with 29 saves for the Capitals, who posted just their second victory in six contests (2-3-1). Jason Chimera notched an assist for the second consecutive contest.

Former Capital Alexander Semin recorded his 500th career point with his first goal of the season for the Hurricanes, who have lost four of their last five at home. Anton Khudobin turned aside 26 shots to fall to 0-6-2 in 2014-15.

With the game tied at 1-1, Fehr stripped Riley Nash of the puck in front of the blue line and skated in before wristing a shot over the glove of Khudobin for his fourth goal - and second versus Carolina this season. Khudobin was pulled for an extra attacker with nearly 2 1/2 minutes to play, but Washington defenseman Brooks Orpik blocked Semin's bid from in close to preserve the advantage.

Chimera's wrist shot on a partial breakaway was denied by Khudobin, but an unmarked Beagle beat the fallen netminder to the puck and poked it home 2:19 into the contest as the Capitals drew first blood. The slim lead held up until 3:19 of the third, as Semin's nifty backhand shot from the slot sailed over Holtby's right shoulder.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington C Nicklas Backstrom saw his six-game point streak come to an end. He had recorded one goal and eight assists in that stretch. ... Carolina coach Bill Peters labeled Cam Ward day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Fellow G Drew MacIntyre was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League to serve as Khudobin's backup. ... Hurricanes D Andrej Sekera sat out with an upper-body injury suffered during the waning moments of his team's 2-1 victory over Nashville.
