Canadiens 6, Bruins 4: Brendan Gallagher collected two goals and an assist while PA Parenteau also tallied twice as Montreal outslugged its Original Six rival to win its home opener.

Max Pacioretty recorded a goal and two assists while Jiri Sekac netted his first NHL tally for the Canadiens, who eliminated Boston in seven games during the second round of the playoffs last season. Carey Price, who accepted the passing of the torch from the legendary Ken Dryden during the pregame ceremonies, finished with 25 saves while David Desharnais, Tomas Plekanec and defenseman Alexei Emelin notched two assists apiece.

Loui Eriksson collected a goal and an assist while captain Zdeno Chara, Simon Gagne and Carl Soderberg also scored for the Bruins, who have dropped four of five since winning their season opener. Rookie Niklas Svedberg made two saves in relief of Tuukka Rask, who yielded five goals on 23 shots to fall to 3-11-3 against Montreal during the regular season.

The Canadiens came back with a flourish after Eriksson deflected defenseman Torey Krug's shot to give Boston a 3-2 lead midway through the second. Sekac forged a tie at 18:11, Parenteau got just enough on his one-timer with 24 seconds left in the session and Gallagher's shot at 7:17 of the third fluttered past Rask to chase the netminder.

Signed to a one-year contract on Tuesday, Gagne trimmed Montreal's lead to 5-4 with 5:49 remaining in the third as the puck caromed off his skate and past Price as he drove to the net. Officials upheld the goal after a short review, but Parenteau ended the bid for the comeback with a power-play, empty-net tally with 20 seconds left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Montreal fourth-line RW Dale Weise, who was the subject of Milan Lucic's ire on the handshake line after the seven-game series, was held out of the lineup for the second time this season. Lucic was booed every time he touched the puck before receiving a 10-minute misconduct after having words with an official following Parenteau's empty-net goal. ... Both teams scored with the man advantage in the first period as Chara redirected C David Krejci's shot from the point at 9:03 before Desharnais' sliding backhand shot banked off Pacioretty's skate and into the net 2 1/2 minutes later. Gallagher gave Montreal a 2-1 lead at 7:43 of the second by swatting home a loose puck on the doorstep before Soderberg cleaned up a rebound 51 seconds afterward. ... The Canadiens went 2-for-3 on the power play to improve to 2-for-17 on the season.
