Blackhawks 3, Stars 2 (SO): Patrick Kane utilized his tremendous skill to score the lone goal of the shootout as visiting Chicago continued its recent mastery of Dallas in the season opener for both teams.

Neither team was able to break through in the first round of the bonus format and Tyler Seguin failed on his second-round attempt for Dallas before Kane backhanded the puck into the top right corner of the net. Newcomer Ales Hemsky was unable to keep the Stars alive as he temporarily lost control of the puck before having a weak shot smothered by Corey Crawford, who finished with 32 saves.

Patrick Sharp and reigning Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith each recorded a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks, who have won eight of their last nine meetings with the Stars. Defenseman Trevor Daley and Cody Eakin scored while Kari Lehtonen stopped 24 shots for Dallas.

Chicago grabbed the lead with 44 seconds remaining in the first period as Keith received a touch pass from fellow blue-liner Brent Seabrook and one-timed it between Lehtonen's pads from the outer edge of the right faceoff circle. The Stars pulled even midway through the second, when Daley knocked Hemsky's deflected pass out of the air and fired the puck past Crawford from the inner edge of the right circle before it hit the ice.

Eakin put Dallas ahead less than five minutes later with a shot from the slot that beat Crawford high to the glove side. But Sharp blasted the puck past Lehtonen from the top of the right circle during a power play with 8:50 left in the third to forge a 2-2 tie.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Daley was celebrating his 31st birthday. ... Chicago D Trevor Van Riemsdyk made his NHL debut, blocking a shot in 11:43 of ice time. ... C Jason Spezza registered an assist in his first game with the Stars after spending 11 seasons with Ottawa.
