Kings 5, Capitals 4 (SO): Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter scored in the first two rounds of the shootout and visiting Los Angeles erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to extend its winning streak to four games.

Captain Dustin Brown and Dwight King each had a goal and an assist, Mike Richards scored on the power play and Marian Gaborik netted the tying goal as the Kings beat Washington for the second time in six games. Jonathan Quick made 23 saves and denied both shots in the bonus format as Los Angeles won its seventh straight road game.

Captain Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of first-period power-play goals, Dustin Penner notched his first tally since joining the Capitals at the trade deadline and rookie Evgeny Kuznetsov tied it in the final minute of regulation. The Capitals jumped on top with the two power-play goals by Ovechkin in the first 7:04 of the contest - the latter a one-timer from his favorite spot in the left circle. Richards cut the deficit in half 2:53 into the middle session, sweeping a rebound into the net, but Penner knocked home a rebound of Chris Brown's shot with 2:42 left in the period for a 3-1 edge.

King ignited the comeback 45 seconds into the third, skating across the crease and tucking home a rebound of Dustin Brown's shot from the right point before Gaborik tied it nearly eight minutes with a wrister from the bottom of the left circle. Dustin Brown's goal put the Kings ahead with 7:05 to play, but Kuznetsov sent the game into overtime by scoring the equalizer with 41.5 seconds remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin's 22 power-play goals tied the team's single-season record he shares with Peter Bondra. ... Richards scored for the second time in three games but it was only his fifth tally in the past 48 contests. ... Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom (upper body) exited in the second period after absorbing a check by Kings D Drew Doughty. Caps RW Troy Brouwer was also shaken up but returned for the third period.
