Dany Heatley tallied for the second time in as many contests to give Minnesota a 2-0 early in the third period when Kuemper made 12 of his saves. Defenseman Jared Spurgeon, who returned from missing the last 14 games with a foot injury, set up both goals for the Wild.

Valtteri Filppula reached the 20-goal mark for the second time in his career with his third-period tally and Tyler Johnson nearly tied it in the final seconds, but his shot hit the left post. Ben Bishop made 24 saves for the Lightning, who finished their four-game trip 1-3-0.

Kuemper stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first period and Niederreiter gave him a lead, stuffing home a rebound of Spurgeon’s bid nine seconds into a power play at 16:04. Bishop kept the Lightning within a goal by turning aside 14 shots in the second session.

Spurgeon stole the puck in the Tampa Bay zone and sent it to Heatley in front where he knocked it home only 34 seconds into the third period to double the lead. The Lightning pulled within a goal with 6:07 left when Filppula deflected a shot by captain Martin St. Louis between his legs and past Kuemper.
