Hurricanes 4, Capitals 3 (OT): Jeff Skinner's third goal of the game 1:20 into overtime lifted visiting Carolina past Washington.
After captain Alex Ovechkin's poorly-timed backhand pass led to a Carolina 3-on-1 rush, Skinner converted defenseman Ryan Murphy's cross-ice pass for his second hat trick of the season. Manny Malhotra had the other goal while Anton Khudobin made 38 saves for the Hurricanes, who have won two straight following a five-game losing skid.
Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 31st goal and defenseman Steve Oleksy and Troy Brouwer also tallied for the Capitals, who have dropped three in a row and five of six. Philipp Grubauer stopped 29 shots in defeat.
After Skinner's power-play goal 13:27 into the opening period gave the Hurricanes the lead, the teams combined to score five times in a 3:45 span early in the second. Ovechkin kicked off the barrage, as he gained the blue line before unleashing a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that glanced in off the crossbar.
Oleksy's come-around goal from a sharp angle gave Washington its first lead at 3:54 after Malhotra and Brouwer traded tallies 1:18 apart. Skinner drew the Hurricanes even 40 seconds later, jumping on Murphy's rebound in the low slot and snapping a low shot past Grubauer.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin led all skaters with nine shots on goal. ... Skinner has seven goals in his last five games. ... Washington fell to 10-6 in games decided after 60 minutes, while Carolina improved to 4-9.
