Capitals 3, Rangers 2: Eric Fehr snapped a tie with 5:09 remaining in the third period and Philipp Grubauer turned aside 38 shots as host Washington defeated New York for the second time in under three weeks.

Nicklas Backstrom collected a goal and an assist while defenseman Mike Green also tallied for the Capitals, who improved to 5-2-2 since skating to a 4-1 triumph over the Rangers on Dec. 8.

Benoit Pouliot scored a power-play goal to extend his career-high point streak to six games for New York. Carl Hagelin netted his third career short-handed tally to forge a 2-2 tie early in the third period.

After having a potential goal disallowed in the second period, Fehr gave Washington a 3-2 lead by unleashing a wrist shot from above the right faceoff circle that beat rookie Cam Talbot (31 saves).

Backstrom scored for the second straight game to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead with 1:05 remaining in the second period. The puck skipped past New York defenseman Ryan McDonagh at the blue line before Backstrom's bid from the right circle sailed between the pads of Talbot. Hagelin converted a breakaway chance 17 seconds into the third for his fourth goal in six games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Fehr nearly gave Washington a 2-1 lead midway into the second period as his quick shot from the slot beat Talbot. A goal originally was credited, but reviews showed that the puck did not cross the line. ... New York D Anton Stralman suffered an undisclosed injury, which hampered him throughout the first period. He did not return for the second. ... After drawing a tripping penalty against LW Rick Nash, Green opened the scoring 6:55 into the contest. LW Martin Erat patiently skated along the boards before deftly backhanding a feed to Green, who blasted a shot that deflected off the stick of New York C Derek Stepan and past Talbot. Pouliot answered 1:37 into the second period, redirecting C Brad Richards' shot from the point.
