Capitals 4, Blue Jackets 3 (OT): Captain Alex Ovechkin chipped a rebound past Sergei Bobrovsky 1:34 into overtime to lift Washington to its fifth straight home victory.
Mikhail Grabovski and defenseman John Carlson each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, while Joel Ward added a shorthanded tally to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games. Braden Holtby made 24 saves for his fourth win in five starts.
Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and an assist and Cam Atkinson and Jared Boll also scored for the Blue Jackets, who fell to 2-4-1 on the road.
Ward scored into an open net after Bobrovsky (30 saves) misplayed the puck on a power play 8:56 into the third period. Boll forged a 2-2 tie 2:26 later with his first goal since March 22 and Atkinson put a deke between Holtby’s legs on a breakaway 2:57 after that, but Grabovski sent the game to overtime with 1:45 remaining in regulation.
Dubinsky opened the scoring while short-handed at 7:50 of the second period, bringing the puck out from behind Washington’s net and reaching around Holtby with a backhand deke. Carlson tied the game with six minutes remaining in the frame, tapping in a pass at the edge of the crease on an odd-man rush.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin is tied for the league lead with 14 goals. … Blue Jackets C Derek MacKenzie left in the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return. … Dubinsky has seven points (two goals, five assists) on a four-game streak.
