Avalanche 1, Penguins 0: Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 34 shots for his 38th career shutout as Colorado snapped host Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak.
Captain Gabriel Landeskog scored for the third consecutive game as the Avalanche (8-1-0) remained perfect in five road games and handed the Penguins their first defeat in six home contests. Giguere improved to 3-0-0 and posted his second shutout of the season by making 16 saves in the final 20 minutes.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 13 shots as he absorbed his first loss in eight games for the Penguins, which held Colorado without a shot for the first 13 1/2 minutes of the game and for nearly the first 12 minutes of the third period. Pittsburgh went 0-for-7 on the power play against the league's No. 4 penalty-killing unit.
Landeskog broke the scoreless deadlock at 5:26 of the second period, coming out of the penalty box and streaking down the right side before unleashing a wrist shot that hit a defender's stick and sailed past Fleury.
The Penguins dominated the first period, going on the power play three times in the first 12 minutes while keeping the Avalanche from registering a shot, but they were unable to muster many solid chances against Giguere. The 36-year-old netminder made his best stop with just over 7 1/2 minutes to play in the game, denying Chris Kunitz with a glove save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had his career-best season-opening point streak halted at eight games. He registered a season-high seven shots and single-handedly outshot Colorado (5-4) in the first 20 minutes. ... It was the first matchup between Crosby and Avalanche rookie C Nathan MacKinnon, who both hail from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, and were drafted No. 1 overall. ... Avalanche F Cody McLeod received a five-game suspension from the NHL on Monday for boarding Detroit D Niklas Kronwall on Thursday. McLeod already sat out Saturday's game in Buffalo.
