Blackhawks 4, Red Wings 1: Andrew Shaw scored a pair of goals and captain Jonathan Toews netted his first of the playoffs as top-seeded Chicago avoided elimination with a convincing victory in Game 5 of its Western Conference second-round series against visiting Detroit.

Bryan Bickell also scored, defenseman Duncan Keith notched two assists and Corey Crawford made 25 saves for the Blackhawks, who trail 3-2 and look to even the series with a win in Game 6 at Detroit on Monday.

Dan Cleary recorded the lone goal and Jimmy Howard turned aside 41 shots for the seventh-seeded Red Wings, who entered the third period down by two but were outshot 17-4 in the session.

Bickell opened the scoring with 5:52 remaining in the first period, burying a rebound while alone on the doorstep. After Cleary forged a tie midway through the second, Shaw put Chicago ahead for good by redirecting Keith's one-timer from the blue line past Howard during a power play at 13:08.

Toews ended his drought less than three minutes later, when he lifted the puck and banked it off Howard's mask and in from the right side of the net with the Blackhawks on another man advantage. Shaw capped his first career multi-goal postseason game at 6:58 of the third as he grabbed the puck behind the net after Viktor Stalberg's shot went wide and tucked it in at the left post.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit D Niklas Kronwall was checked hard into the boards by Bickell midway through the third period and took one brief shift afterward before remaining on the bench for the rest of the game. ... Red Wings C Johan Franzen appeared in his 100th career playoff game. ... Chicago is 35-for-36 on the penalty kill this postseason. ... Toews' goal was just his fourth in 23 contests over the last three postseasons.
