Red Wings 3, Blackhawks 1: Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart in the second period and host Detroit went on to take a 2-1 lead in its Western Conference second-round series against top-seeded Chicago.

Pavel Datsyuk also tallied and Jimmy Howard made 39 saves for the seventh-seeded Red Wings, who improved to 3-1 at home this postseason. Detroit hosts Game 4 on Thursday.

Patrick Kane scored and Corey Crawford turned aside 27 shots for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Blackhawks, who outshot the Red Wings 17-7 in the third period.

After a scoreless opening session, Detroit took the lead at 7:49 of the second as Nyquist chased down an outlet pass on the right wing, cut across the slot and between two defenders and drifted to his left before beating Crawford from below the left faceoff circle. Miller made it 2-0 shortly thereafter, diving to poke in a loose puck in the crease following a turnover by Chicago defenseman Michal Rozsival.

Kane halved the Blackhawks' deficit at 4:35 of the third, firing the puck between Howard's pads while on a short breakaway. Datsyuk restored the two-goal advantage for Detroit 2:11 later as he unleashed a laser from the left circle that sailed under the crossbar.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago RW Viktor Stalberg made his first appearance of the series, registering one shot and blocking another in 9:44 of ice time after being a healthy scratch for the first two games. ... Blackhawks RW Patrick Sharp was kept off the scoresheet, ending his point streak at six games. ... Detroit has won two straight against its Original Six rival following an eight-game winless streak in the all-time series. ... Kane has scored the lone goal for Chicago in each of the last two contests. ... Red Wings C Johan Franzen appeared to be injured after being rammed into the boards by Blackhawks D Niklas Hjalmarsson just before Kane's goal, but the veteran did not miss a shift.
