Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1: Defenseman Brendan Smith scored to snap a tie late in the second period as visiting Detroit ended an eight-game winless streak against top-seeded Chicago and evened their Western Conference second-round series at one game apiece.

Johan Franzen netted his team-leading fourth goal and Valtteri Filppula also tallied in the third period to seal the victory. Damien Brunner scored for the second straight contest and Jimmy Howard turned aside 19 shots for the seventh-seeded Red Wings, who host Game 3 on Monday.

Patrick Kane snapped a 14-game postseason goalless drought and Patrick Sharp added an assist to extend his playoff point streak to six games. Corey Crawford finished with 26 saves for the Blackhawks, who fell to Detroit for the first time since suffering a 3-2 overtime loss on Jan. 13, 2012.

With the game tied at 1-1, Henrik Zetterberg skated past diving defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson to reel in a loose puck along the left-wing boards. The captain skated along the end line before wristing a centering feed to Smith, who made no mistake while shooting at an open net with 3:52 remaining in the second period.

Franzen provided insurance 7:19 into the third period, accepting a stretch pass from defenseman Jonathan Ericsson before snapping a shot over Crawford's glove. Filppula capped the scoring nearly five minutes later by unleashing a backhander as he fell to the ice that sailed between the pads of Crawford.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago opened the scoring with 5:55 remaining in the first period as Sharp skated up the left wing and saw his shot carom to C Michal Handzus in the slot. Handzus alertly tapped the puck to his right to Kane, who blasted it past Howard for his first postseason goal since April 21, 2011 - and second since his 2010 Stanley Cup-winning tally versus Philadelphia. ... After failing to score in 34 regular-season games, Smith has tallied twice in the last six contests. He had a goal and an assist in Game 4 of the first-round series against second-seeded Anaheim on May 6. ... The Blackhawks lost for the first time in five postseason outings at the United Center. ... Zetterberg finished with two assists, giving him nine points (three goals) in his last five games.
