Benoit Pouliot registered a goal and an assist while Teddy Purcell, Tom Pyatt and defenseman Keith Aulie also scored as the Lightning won for the seventh time in their last eight trips to Carolina. Bishop, acquired from Ottawa on Wednesday, posted his second shutout of the season and tied Daren Puppa's franchise record for saves in a blanking.

Dan Ellis made 25 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost six straight at home and all four meetings with the Lightning this season. Carolina is 1-9-1 in its last 11 games overall and tied with Tampa Bay for third in the Southeast - four points behind division-leading Washington and five back of the New York Rangers for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Carolina’s Alexander Semin was ruled to have kicked in captain Eric Staal’s pass - after video review - with 37.1 seconds left in the first period and the Lightning broke the scoreless tie early in the second. Purcell roofed a rebound 28 seconds into the session after Ellis was unable to handle defenseman Matt Carle’s shot from the left point.

Bishop, who joined Dwayne Roloson as the only goaltenders to record a shutout in their Lightning debut, stopped 16 shots in the first period and 12 in the second - including one on a wide-open Jeff Skinner - and Tampa Bay added to its lead. Pyatt redirected Alex Killorn’s nifty pass from the right faceoff circle at 15:55 of the middle period and Aulie’s rising shot from the left point beat Ellis for a 3-0 advantage with 42.4 seconds left in the session.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay captain Vincent Lecavalier was back in the lineup after missing nine games with a foot injury and hit the post twice. … Carolina failed on its three power-play chances. …Lightning D Victor Hedman suffered a lower-body injury in the first period and did not return.
