Maple Leafs 3, Capitals 2: Matt Frattin scored his fourth goal in as many games to cap a third-period rally as Toronto won at home for the first time this season.
Frattin finished a give-and-go with Nazem Kadri at 9:53 of the third period after Nikolai Kulemin tied the game 2:13 earlier as the Maple Leafs outshot Washington 16-9 over the final 20 minutes. James van Riemsdyk added a power-play goal in the first period.
Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 24th goal in 28 career games against Toronto with a power-play tally in the second period. Toronto native Joel Ward added his team-leading fourth goal and Michal Neuvirth had 37 saves for the Capitals, who squandered a 2-1 lead for the second straight game.
Toronto outshot Washington 15-7 in the first period thanks to five power-play chances, but van Riemsdyk had the Maple Leafs’ only goal with the man advantage after Ward opened the scoring 96 seconds into the contest.
Ovechkin made it 2-1 early in the second as his wrist shot fooled James Reimer, who stopped 20 shots for the Maple Leafs.
