Bruins 5, Hurricanes 3: David Krejci scored to snap a tie with 1:50 remaining in the third period as visiting Boston exacted a measure of revenge after being swept by Carolina last season.

Captain Zdeno Chara scored for the second straight game and added two assists. Nathan Horton, Tyler Seguin and Krejci scored and set up a goal and Anton Khudobin stopped 29 shots in his season debut for the Bruins, who have killed off all 23 short-handed situations in 2013 after thwarting six power plays by the Hurricanes.

Jeff Skinner scored his team-leading fifth goal in four games and captain Eric Staal added a goal 50 seconds later. Defenseman Jamie McBain also scored and Cam Ward finished with 33 saves for Carolina, which outscored Boston 14-5 en route sweeping the season series in 2011-12.

With the Bruins enjoying sustained pressure in a tie game late in the third period, rookie defenseman Dougie Hamilton skated in and alertly fired a cross-slot pass to Krejci. The center one-timed the puck from the left faceoff circle past an out-of-position Ward for his first goal of the season.

After Horton gave Boston a 3-1 advantage with 4:08 left in the second period, Carolina answered two minutes later as Skinner beat Khudobin under the crossbar on the short side. Alexander Semin kept the pressure on and made Chris Kelly pay for a turnover in his own end by centering the puck to Staal, who snapped a shot past Khudobin for his fourth goal of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: With his 232nd victory, Claude Julien moved past Don Cherry into sole possession of third place on the Bruins' all-time coaching wins list. ... The Bruins' power play went 2-for-4 on Monday to improve to 3-for-21 this season. ... McBain's goal was Carolina's first this season in the opening period.
