Captain Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist for his fourth
consecutive multi-point game and Nicklas Backstrom set up all three of
his team's tallies as the Washington Capitals skated to their fourth
straight victory with a 3-1 triumph over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.
Troy Brouwer and defenseman Dennis Wideman also scored and Tomas Vokoun
turned aside 18 shots for Washington, which improved to 9-0-0 this
season with defenseman Mike Green in the lineup. Sidelined since Nov. 11
with a groin injury, Green logged nearly 16 minutes of ice time and had
two blocked shots in his return.
Captain Jarome Iginla picked up an assist on Curtis Glencross' tally in
the second period, but was unable to net career goal No. 500 as Calgary
dropped its fourth in a row (0-3-1) during its season-high seven-game
road trip.
With his team on the power play, Ovechkin wasted little time extending
his points streak to seven games. The Russian one-timed a cross-slot
feed from Marcus Johansson and sent it past Miikka Kiprusoff just 1:11
into the contest. Ovechkin now has seven goals and four assists in his
last seven games.
Brouwer doubled the advantage 8:49 into the second period after settling
a rebound from Ovechkin's point shot and pushing it past Kiprusoff for
his 11th of the season.
Although Glencross trimmed the deficit to one after converting Iginla's
centering feed, Wideman answered three minutes later by one-timing a
pass from Backstrom and beating Kiprusoff from the right faceoff circle.
