Jason LaBarbera stopped a penalty shot with 24.5 seconds left as the visiting Phoenix Coyotes held on for a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

Ray Whitney and Radim Vrbata each recorded a goal and an assist as the Coyotes won for just the second time in six games.

LaBarbera, who came on for an injured Mike Smith with 16:31 remaining, stopped all eight shots he faced to preserve the victory.

Florida was awarded a penalty shot after Phoenix was ruled to have pushed the net off its pegs intentionally in the final minute. LaBarbera got just enough of Stephen Weiss’ penalty shot as the puck lay on the line.

Whitney and Vrbata both scored on the power play, the first time Phoenix has scored more than one with the man advantage in a game since opening night.

Brian Campbell scored for Florida, which saw its eight-game point streak at home snapped. The Panthers, already with four forwards injured, lost forwards Marco Sturm and Mikael Samuelsson during the game.

Florida had to kill off six power plays in the first two periods and seven overall, the most in any game this season.

The Coyotes capitalized on two of them. Whitney converted a nifty cross-ice pass from Oliver Ekman-Larsson on a 5-on-3 at 19:53 of the first period. Vrbata scored from the left circle 9:02 into the second for a 2-0 lead.
