Jonathan Toews had a shorthanded goal and was the only player to convert in the shootout as the Chicago Blackhawks pulled out a 5-4 victory over the visiting New York Islanders on Friday.

Corey Crawford made two saves and Matt Moulson hit the post on the Islanders’ last try in the shootout as Chicago improved its home record to 8-2-2.

The Islanders have earned five points in the first three games of a four-game road trip that ends in Dallas on Saturday.

Toews scored his first shorthanded goal of the season and third of his career to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead with 1:19 left in the second period. Chicago outshot the Islanders 15-2 in the middle frame.

The Islanders would not go away, dominating much of the third period with a 23-7 edge in shots and forcing overtime.

P.A. Parenteau scored on the power play 46 seconds into the third to tie it 3-3. After Patrick Sharp put Chicago back ahead 4-3 on the power play at 5:08, Nino Niederreiter went in alone to score his first of the season and second of his career at 8:55.

The Islanders led 2-1after 20 minutes. Kyle Okposo scored on the power play and Moulson recorded his ninth goal to take over the team lead. It was Moulson’s third goal in three games.

The teams will meet again next Thursday in New York.
