Nicklas Backstrom scored the tying goal with 48 seconds left in regulation and added the winner in overtime as the Washington Capitals stormed back from a three-goal deficit to edge the visiting Anaheim Ducks 5-4 on Tuesday.

Joel Ward, Dennis Wideman and Troy Brouwer each added a goal for the Capitals, who snapped a two-game slide.

The winner came when Jeff Schultz sent in a wrister from the left boards and had it glance off the foot of Alex Ovechkin. The puck bounced across the slot to Backstrom, who snapped it past Jonas Hiller from the doorstep at the 2:18 mark of overtime to clinch the win.

Anaheim had scored a total of one goal in its previous two games but looked ready to run away with it against Washington, jumping out to a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. Teemu Selanne assisted on Saku Koivu’s opening tally in the first and then added two of his own.

The Capitals stormed back in the last seven minutes of the second, tallying twice to cut it to 3-2. Ward scored his third goal and then assisted on defenseman Wideman’s third.

Corey Perry made it 4-2 Ducks on the power play in the third, but Brouwer cut it to a single goal again and Backstrom completed the comeback, collecting a rebound and wristing it in from the left side.
