Jason Spezza recorded a goal and three assists as the Ottawa Senators took advantage of the struggling Philadelphia Flyers en route to a 5-2 home victory at Scotiabank Place on Tuesday.
Ryan Shannon and rookie Bobby Butler added a goal and an assist apiece for the Senators.
The Flyers (46-23-11) dropped their fourth straight game to fall two points behind the Washington Capitals (47-22-11) for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia is now only one point ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins (47-25-8) for first place in the Atlantic Division.
The Flyers led 1-0 and 2-1 on a pair of power-play goals by captain Mike Richards, but could not keep the Ottawa offense down at the end of the second period. Shannon tied it on the power play when he accepted a feed from Spezza and lifted his 11th goal past rookie Sergei Bobrovsky with 1:18 left in the period.
Butler gave Ottawa its first lead with just 14 seconds left in the second, wristing a shot from the doorstep between Bobrovsky’s pads.
Spezza chipped in his 20th goal on the power play in the third to add some insurance for the Senators.
