Alex Ovechkin collected two goals and an assist and Eric Fehr added a pair of tallies in his return to the lineup as the Washington Capitals cruised to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
Rookie goaltender Braden Holtby made 22 saves for his first career shutout and Alexander Semin added a goal for the Capitals, who moved within two points of the Philadelphia Flyers for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
Washington began its assault in the second period when Jason Arnott whipped a pass from above the right faceoff circle to the left of the net. Ovechkin collected the puck and wristed a shot past Nikolai Khabibulin on the power play.
Fehr, who was playing his first game since Jan. 14 after recovering from a shoulder injury, doubled the advantage nearly five minutes later. With Washington on the power play, Fehr tipped in the rebound from defenseman John Carlson’s shot for his ninth goal.
Ovechkin and Fehr added even-strength goals within five minutes of each other in the third and Semin wristed in his 25th of the season with 5:30 left to complete the rout. Ovechkin, who now has 601 career points, has three goals and seven assists during his six-game point streak.
Khabibulin finished with 31 saves for Edmonton.
