Ryan Getzlaf scored 4:03 into overtime and Jonas Hiller made 31 saves Wednesday night as the visiting Anaheim Ducks defeated the reeling Washington Capitals, 2-1.
Joffrey Lupul scored a power-play goal in the second period for the Ducks (17-13-4), who have won three straight games and seven of 10.
Brooks Laich scored in the first period for the Capitals (18-12-3), who have lost seven straight games.
Hiller’s best stop came when he robbed Nicklas Backstrom with the shaft of his stick following a 3-on-1 break in the second period to keep it a 1-0 game.
Semyon Varlamov made 22 saves for the Capitals, who fell to 9-2-3 when scoring first this season.
The Capitals came out flying and took the lead when Laich shoveled a backhander past Hiller at 14:22. Washington outshot Anaheim, 17-7, in the first period.
Laich nearly had another goal in the first period, but Getzlaf swept the puck off the goal line after it trickled between Hiller’s pads.
Slumping superstar Alex Ovechkin, who has two goals in his last 15 games, hit the crossbar in the second period. Teammate Alexander Semin, who leads the Capitals with 18 goals, sat out with an unspecified injury.
