Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom combined for three goals and four assists as the Washington Capitals erupted for six tallies in the second period en route to a 7-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Alexander Semin and defenseman Mike Green each recorded a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who won for just the ninth time in 41 all-time visits to Calgary.

Olli Jokinen scored 44 seconds into the game and Curtis Glencross tallied with just under nine minutes to go in the first period to give the Flames a 2-0 advantage. Washington took over from there, netting seven unanswered goals to finish its three-game road trip at 2-1.

Backstrom began the onslaught late in the first with a power-play goal and Ovechkin scored two man-advantage tallies in a 12-second span early in the second to put the Capitals in front. Green and Matt Bradley tallied 13 seconds apart midway through the period to make it 5-1 and Semin converted a pass from Ovechkin with 6:05 left to chase Miikka Kiprusoff.

David Steckel completed the scoring by beating Henrik Karlsson on a penalty shot with 97 seconds remaining in the middle period.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 27 shots for Washington, which lost two of its previous three road games.

Kiprusoff returned for the third period and finished with 21 saves for the Flames, who have scored first in seven straight contests.
