PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby might have scored the winner in overtime Monday night, but the Pittsburgh Penguins figured their 5-4 win over the reeling Philadelphia Flyers was sparked during the second intermission.

The Penguins had gone from a 1-0 lead after the first to a 3-1 deficit and lost No. 1 goaltender Matt Murray to an apparent right leg injury during the second period.

"We had a good talk between the second and third," said Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang, whose shot set up Crosby's winner, a chip-shot deflection 1:48 into overtime to hand the Flyers their eighth straight loss.

"Nobody was happy," Crosby said of the second intermission. "To give up that many chances after we had a really good first, and to have such a big difference from the first to the second for no reason ..."

The response came quickly as the Penguins (13-10-3) tied it 3-3 with goals in the first two minutes of the third on goals by Patric Hornqvist and Bryan Rust.

Jake Guentzel forced overtime with his second goal when he tied it at 4 with 1:04 left in regulation after Michael Raffl gave Philadelphia a 4-3 lead at 16:19.

Philadelphia (8-9-6), which erased a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals in the second from Shayne Gostisbehere, Travis Konecny and Sean Couturier for a 3-1 lead, is 0-3-5 in his past eight -- its longest losing streak since it lost 10 straight in February 2008.

"It's hard because we're playing really good hockey games," Konecny said. "We're putting ourselves in a (situation) to win hockey games and maybe we just let our guard down for a couple minutes and teams are just taking advantage of those couple of minutes that we're sitting back.

"It's going to turn for us sooner or later here."

Murray made 20 saves before he was helped off the ice at 15:39 of the second period after Jakub Voracek bowled into him on a breakaway. Coach Mike Sullivan said Murray will be further evaluated Tuesday.

"Again, he was great for us," Crosby said of Murray. "He's been great for us, and, hopefully, he's all right."

Backup goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped eight of the 10 shots he faced.

Brian Elliott made 47 saves for Philadelphia.

Guentzel gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead at 16:03 of the first period. Defenseman Justin Schultz started behind his net and carried the puck into the neutral zone, where he fed Guentzel with a soft lead pass.

Guentzel moved in from the right point and beat Elliott with a laser far side from the dot. Murray, who directed the puck to Schultz, got an assist, the second game in a row a Pittsburgh goalie earned a point.

"When you look at the way the game played out, in a lot of ways it was a microcosm of our season," Sullivan said. "We had a pretty good first period, get a timely goal from Jake. Come out the second period, don't play the right way and give away a ton of scoring chances.

"Come out in the third period, play Penguins identity."

Gostisbehere tied it 1-1 at 3:40 of the second period during a five-on-three power play when his one-timer from the left circle made it through traffic and past Murray's glove.

Konecny broke the tie at 15:05 of the second when a shot from the right point by Dale Weise went in off him in front.

Less than a minute later, Murray left and was replaced by Jarry.

With 31.5 seconds left in the second, Couturier lifted a one-timer under the crossbar to give Philadelphia a 3-1 lead.

"Guys like (Hornqvist) were fired up," Letang said of the second intermission. "He came out of the gate pretty strong, got a big goal for us."

Hornqvist, who was tripped by Andrew MacDonald to draw a penalty, scored on the ensuing power play when he batted a rebound out of the air to make it 3-2 at 1:07 of the third period.

Crosby got an assist, extending his point streak to four games.

Just 39 seconds later, Rust tied it with a strong individual effort. In his end, he blocked a shot, setting himself up for a breakaway while being closely chased. Elliott made an initial stop, but Rust got his shaft on the puck to knock it in over the goalie.

"I think they just came at us," Elliott said. "They had a good push and took all of two minutes to tie it up. So we talked about it. Tried to keep our game going. Be aggressive. They come out and get a power play and kind of put an end to that."

Raffl gave the Flyers a short-lived 4-3 lead when he stole the puck in his own end and took off. He swooped in from the left point with Pittsburgh's Phil Kessel draped over him and cut across above the crease. Jarry missed with a poke-check and Raffl tucked it into a half-empty net with a backhand.

Guentzel tied it 4-4 when a point shot by Schultz went in off his body.
