Mark Giordano and Michael Frolik scored 1:07 apart to cap a five-goal third period, and the host Calgary Flames rallied to beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-5 on Thursday night.

Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan and James Neal also scored in the third period for the Flames, who trailed 4-1 but stormed back. Mikael Backlund had a second-period goal for Calgary.

Mike Smith had 21 saves, Giordano also had two assists and Matt Tkachuk added three assists for the Flames.

Calgary came back after Ian Cole was given a game misconduct for a hard check on Mark Jankowski. Lindholm scored a power-play goal 47 seconds into the third period, Monahan made it 4-3 at 5:21 and Neal brought the Flames all the way back with a goal at 10:52.

Giordano broke the tie when he beat Semyon Varlamov with a wrister at 13:47, and Frolik made it 6-4 with his sixth goal at 14:54.

The Avalanche pulled Varlamov, who had 31 saves, for an extra skater with nearly four minutes left. They got a power play, and Gabe Landeskog scored with 1:03 left to make it close.

Colin Wilson and Sheldon Dries had a goal and an assist each, and Vladislav Kamenev and Carl Soderberg also scored for the Avalanche, who were playing after four days off.

After a scoreless first period, the Avalanche got things going early in the second on the penalty kill. Kamenev got the puck at his own blue line and skated down the left side. He blasted a slapshot past Smith on the short side at 3:22.

Less than two minutes later, Dries set a screen in front of the net and deflected Tyson Barrie's shot off his stick. It ricocheted off Rasmus Andersson's skate and in at 5:12.

Calgary got on the board 1:22 later when Tkachuk's feed from behind the net found Backlund out front, and his one-timer cut the deficit to 2-1.

Wilson scored his fourth of the season at 11:04 of the second, and Soderberg made it 4-1 with his fifth at 16:41.
