CALGARY, Alberta -- San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer knew that his team was fortunate to beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime on Monday.

Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into the extra session to give the Sharks the two points, but it was the play of goaltender Martin Jones that was the main factor in San Jose even having a chance to win the game.

"If not for him, we don't get points tonight," said DeBoer of Jones, who made 47 saves. "He was great, but he's a part of the team. Throughout a season, you need some nights like this where you're not on or you take too many penalties and he bails you out, and he did that tonight for us."

Pavelski was just pleased to get the chance to tap a pass from Brent Burns past Calgary goalie Joni Ortio on the first shift of overtime.

"We'll take it," said the San Jose captain, who also commended Jones for his strong performance. "He was on. He was reading all the plays. You could see him anticipating everything. It was just one of those performances. We've been on the other side. It was great to see. We're happy for him."

Burns also scored his 24th goal of the season early in the first period for San Jose (36-23-6).

"You just kind of ride that roller coaster," said Burns, who has scored goals in four consecutive games. "The guys have been playing well. They've been making good plays, and a lot of times I've been the recipient of a lot of good plays."

Joe Colborne scored a power-play goal for the Flames with 1:22 remaining in the third period to force overtime, while Calgary netminder Joni Ortio stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced.

"That might be some of the best power-play zone time and chances that we've had all year," Colborne said. "We could've had three or four easily. Give them credit, sometimes you need a goalie to go out and steal you a game. It was a pretty incredible game by Jonesy."

The Flames (27-34-5) set a season high with 48 shots on goal. Their previous high was when they took 40 during a 3-2 home win over the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 23.

"I'm very proud of our team," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "We're a young team and sometimes it doesn't always go our way, but the one thing that we have to respect from our team is the effort -- the commitment to leave everything on the ice, to play with energy, to play with passion, and we're getting this, and that's step one in the right direction."

On Calgary's seventh power play of the game late in the third, Colborne tipped in Mark Giordano's point shot to end Jones' shutout bid.

"Great shot by Gio," Colborne said. "We knew sooner or later one had to squirt by."

Burns gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 1:56 of the first when his shot from the point through traffic found its way into the top corner, glove side behind Ortio.

Calgary outshot San Jose 11-7 in the opening frame largely due to three power plays, including a two-man advantage for 24 seconds late in the period.

Jones, who helped the Calgary Hitmen win a Western Hockey League title in 2010 to culminate a successful four-year junior career, had to be sharp to turn aside successive shots by Sam Bennett, Sean Monahan and Dougie Hamilton late in Calgary's man advantage.

The Flames continued to pour on the pressure and fired the first 10 shots on net in the second period, but still weren't able to solve Jones, who thwarted scoring attempts by Giordano, Hamilton and Gaudreau during yet another power play for the Flames.

"The second period, we just got into some penalty trouble," Jones said. "I think that's where they got a lot of their momentum. We stayed strong. We had a good penalty kill."

Shortly after that man advantage expired, Ortio made his best save of the game to turn aside a snap shot by Matt Nieto, which was the first shot of the second period for the Sharks just past the 10-minute mark.

NOTES: After suiting up for 11 consecutive games in his first season with the Flames, D Jakub Nakladal sat out Monday's contest due to an eye injury he sustained as a result of a high-stick in the second period of Calgary's 4-2 win in Pittsburgh over the Penguins on Saturday. ... The Flames recalled D Tyler Wotherspoon on an emergency basis on Monday from the AHL's Stockton Heat to fill in on the blue line for Nakladal. ... C Melker Karlsson returned to the Sharks' lineup after missing the previous two games with an undisclosed injury. ... D Matt Tennyson (concussion) sat out his seventh straight game for the Sharks, while D Dylan DeMelo and C Micheal Haley were healthy scratches. ... Calgary scratched G Niklas Backstrom, who has yet to make his Flames debut since being acquired from the Minnesota Wild at the NHL trade deadline on Feb. 29.
