Oilers 4, Avalanche 1: Brandon Davidson scored his first career goal and fellow rookie Andrew Miller collected three assists as visiting Edmonton delivered a major blow to Colorado's playoff chances.

Justin Schultz scored the go-ahead goal with 4:32 left in the second period while fellow defenseman Nikita Nikitin and Taylor Hall added empty-netters late in the third for the Oilers, who defeated the Avalanche for the second time in six days. Anton Lander notched a pair of assists and Richard Bachman made 29 saves in his second straight start as Edmonton finished 2-0-1 in the season series.

Ryan O'Reilly tallied to extend his point streak to a career-high eight games for the Avalanche, who remained eight points behind Winnipeg for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with six games remaining. Semyon Varlamov turned aside 32 shots as Colorado had its modest two-game winning streak snapped.

Edmonton opened the scoring 4:49 into the first period as Lander made a cross-slot pass from below the right faceoff circle to Davidson, who beat Varlamov from the left circle. It was the first career point for the 23-year-old, who was playing in his sixth NHL game.

The Avalanche drew even with 6:42 left in the session, when O'Reilly grabbed the rebound of Alex Tanguay's blast from the top of the right circle and deposited the puck past Hiller from the doorstep. Schultz restored the Oilers' lead late in the second, outracing Nate Guenin to the puck after the Colorado defenseman was unable to control it off the right-wing boards and backhanding it past Varlamov.

GAME NOTEBOOK: O'Reilly has collected five goals and eight assists during his point streak. ... Bachman has stopped 58-of-59 shots over his last two starts as Edmonton embraced its role of spoiler by defeating playoff hopefuls Dallas and Colorado. ... Hall extended his point streak to six games as the Oilers improved to 5-1-2 over their last eight contests.
