Red Wings 5, Penguins 4 (OT): Daniel Alfredsson scored his second goal of the contest at 4:59 of overtime as Detroit improved to 8-0-2 in its last 10 games on home ice.

After killing off a five-minute major penalty that carried into overtime, the Red Wings scored their third goal of the contest following a carom off a Pittsburgh defenseman. Detroit skated in on a 3-on-1 rush, and after Marc-Andre Fleury (25 saves) made the initial stop, the puck deflected off blue-liner Rob Scuderi and into the net.

Gustav Nyquist scored for the fourth time in three contests and added an assist for the Red Wings, who have won four in a row at Joe Louis Arena and remained one point out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Tomas Tatar and Todd Bertuzzi also tallied, Alfredsson set up a goal and Jimmy Howard turned aside 39 shots.

Evgeni Malkin scored twice in the latter stages of the second period and Lee Stempniak tallied for the second straight contest for the Penguins, who have dropped three of their last four to sit four points behind idle Boston for the top spot in the East. Craig Adams scored for the first time in 65 contests, James Neal notched two assists while playing in his 400th NHL game and Jussi Jokinen also set up a pair of tallies.

Malkin cleaned up a rebound to forge a 2-2 tie before his blast from above the slot during a 5-on-3 power play with 2:02 left in the second period gave Pittsburgh its first lead. Tatar answered midway through the third and Bertuzzi's wrist shot deflected off Pittsburgh rookie defenseman Olli Maatta at 12:17 before Adams knotted it up two minutes later.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Alfredsson has torched the Penguins in his career, collecting 24 goals and 44 assists in 66 contests. ... With Nyquist's tally, Buffalo and Florida are now the only NHL teams without at least one 20-goal scorer this season. ... The Red Wings improved to 13-1-2 when Nyquist scores a goal. The 24-year-old Swede has recorded 15 of his team-leading 20 tallies in his last 21 games.
