Tomas Tatar scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who dropped to 7-2-3 in their last 12 road games. Jimmy Howard allowed four tallies on 23 shots over two periods before being replaced by Petr Mrazek, who stopped all three shots he faced in the third.

Pavelski opened the scoring at 4:59 of the first period as he received a pass from below the right faceoff circle by Thornton and beat Howard from the left hash marks. It was the 20th goal of the season for Pavelski, marking the fifth time in his career he has reached the plateau.

Tatar forged a tie with 3:12 left in the session. The Slovakian came out from behind the net on the left side and skated around Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who was without his stick, before backhanding the puck inside the right post.

Desjardins put San Jose ahead for good at 9:44 of the second, when he backhanded the puck off the left-wing boards and skated around Detroit blue-liner Jakub Kindl before regaining possession and beating Howard from the left faceoff circle. Pavelski made it 3-1 less than three minutes later, completing his 22nd career two-goal performance by burying the rebound of defenseman Brad Stuart's point shot.

Boyle capped the scoring during a power play with 3:32 remaining in the period. Fellow blue-liner Jason Demers dished the puck from above the slot to Boyle, who ripped a shot from the right circle inside the left post for his eighth goal.
