Kings 4, Stars 3 (OT): Jeff Carter scored 4:08 into overtime and added two assists as Los Angeles won its sixth consecutive home game and dealt a blow to Dallas’ playoff hopes.

Captain Dustin Brown tallied twice while Mike Richards set up Carter and added a goal of his own for the Kings, who have points in their last five games (4-0-1). Jonathan Quick made 24 saves as Los Angeles seized a two-point edge over San Jose for fourth place in the Western Conference. The Sharks dropped a 4-3 decision to Columbus on Sunday.

Defenseman Alex Goligoski had a goal and an assist and Antoine Roussel and Loui Eriksson also scored for the Stars, who dropped their third road contest in a row (0-2-1). Kari Lehtonen stopped 27 shots as Dallas fell three points out of a playoff spot with three games remaining.

A centering feed from Richards deflected off Carter’s jersey and past Lehtonen in overtime after Brown knotted the contest with his second of the game on a power play early in the third. With Dallas defenseman Brenden Dillon serving a roughing penalty, Brown cleaned up a rebound on the doorstep after a one-timer in the slot by Carter.

Richards opened the scoring 5:06 into the game, lifting a backhand shot over Lehtonen. Brown made it 2-0 at 4:12 of the second with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle but Eriksson answered 20 seconds later to get Dallas on the board.
