Stars 5, Kings 1: Ray Whitney snapped a tie 52 seconds into the third period with the first of his two goals as host Dallas posted its third straight victory but lost goaltender Kari Lehtonen.

Vernon Fiddler recorded two goals and an assist and defenseman Alex Goligoski also scored. Richard Bachman stopped all 22 shots he faced in relief for the Stars, who climbed within two points of Detroit for eighth place in the Western Conference. Dallas' victory also prevented Pacific Division-leading Anaheim from clinching a playoff berth.

Blue-liner Drew Doughty scored a power-play goal and Jonathan Quick made 26 saves for Los Angeles, which failed to earn a point for just the second time in nine games (5-2-2) but remained one ahead of San Jose for fourth in the conference.

Whitney broke a 1-1 deadlock when he received a pass from rookie Alex Chiasson and beat Quick high to the glove side from the top of the slot. Fiddler made it 3-1 at 7:58 when he tipped defenseman Stephane Robidas' one-timer from the right point.

Less than three minutes after Whitney beat Quick from the doorstep, Fiddler capped the scoring when his pass attempt from below the left faceoff circle caromed off a defender and into the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lehtonen, who made his 19th consecutive start, exited with 5:42 remaining in the first period with a lower-body injury. Lehtonen made seven saves before leaving. ... Whitney's two-goal performance was his first since Oct. 27, 2011 against New Jersey. Fiddler's last multi-goal effort came on Nov. 12, 2010, when he recorded his only career hat trick versus Calgary. ... Doughty has scored a goal in each of his last three games after tallying just once in his first 37 contests.
