Michael Grabner scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves as host New York moved into seventh place in the Eastern Conference while dealing a blow to Philadelphia’s playoff chances.

Matt Moulson and John Tavares added a goal and an assist apiece. Tavares and Casey Cizikas scored 28 seconds apart in the final minutes of the third period for the Islanders, who moved improved to 7-1-1 over their last nine games and pulled even in points with Ottawa. The sixth-place Senators hold the tiebreaker based on games played.

Jakub Voracek scored and Steve Mason turned aside 28 shots in his first start for the Flyers. Philadelphia is stuck at 37 points, five behind the eighth-place New York Rangers.

Colin McDonald won a battle along the right boards and sent a pass into the slot for Grabner, who snapped a shot past Mason for his 13th goal to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead with 2:18 left in the second period.

Voracek opened the scoring at 6:28 of the first period, when he took a long pass from captain Claude Giroux and stuffed a backhand shot under Nabokov as the goaltender was hit by teammate Andy MacDonald. Moulson tied the contest just over nine minutes later with a wrist shot from the slot, beating Mason to the glove side.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
The Islanders will play a preseason game against the New Jersey Devils on Sept. 21 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Islanders are slated to move to Brooklyn for the 2015-16 season. ... New York, which is trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007, will visit Boston on Thursday. … Mason’s start snapped a streak of 22 straight games by Ilya Bryzgalov. … McDonald and C Brad Boyes each recorded two assists for the Islanders.
