Hurricanes 3, Jets 1: Alexander Semin and captain Eric Staal collected a goal and an assist apiece and Justin Peters turned aside 34 shots as visiting Carolina snapped a seven-game winless skid (0-6-1).

Jussi Jokinen also scored and Tuomo Ruutu notched a pair of assists for the Hurricanes, who pulled within four points of Southeast Division-leading Winnipeg.

Veteran Olli Jokinen scored his second goal in three contests and Ondrej Pavelec finished with 25 saves for the Jets, who won the two earlier meetings between the division rivals. Winnipeg posted a 4-3 victory on Feb. 21 and skated to a 4-1 triumph on Tuesday.

Semin opened the scoring 66 seconds into the game after converting Ruutu's feed following Staal's failed bid on a wraparound. Jussi Jokinen doubled the advantage just over 8 1/2 minutes later after settling defenseman Joni Pitkanen's cross-ice feed before burying the puck into the gaping net.

Olli Jokinen trimmed the deficit 86 seconds into the second period after accepting Evander Kane's cross-crease pass before deflecting the puck into the net. Staal answered 28 seconds into the third after his shot caromed off the skate of defenseman Zach Bogosian and past Pavelec.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Peters denied C Bryan Little on a breakaway midway through the second period to preserve Carolina's 2-1 lead. ... After scoring a goal and setting up three others for a career-best four-point performance on Tuesday, Kane continued his torrid play versus the Hurricanes with an assist. He has 17 points in 16 career games against Carolina. ... The road team has won all three outings between the Southeast Division rivals. The clubs will conclude their series in Winnipeg on April 18.
