Patrice Bergeron recorded his first career hat trick and Tim Thomas made 31 saves as the Boston Bruins cruised to a 6-0 home victory over the struggling Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.
Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand each notched a goal and an assist, Blake Wheeler also scored and David Krejci set up a pair of tallies for the Bruins, who won for just the third time in seven games.
Bergeron opened the scoring at 3:33 of the first period and gave Boston a 3-0 lead just 2:50 into the second session. The 25-year-old completed his milestone performance at 5:04 of the third with his 13th goal of the season and fifth in three contests.
With the three tallies, Bergeron has 17 points in his last 13 games.
Thomas turned aside nine shots in both the first and third periods while stopping 13 in the second for his 23rd career shutout and league-leading sixth this campaign.
Brian Elliott allowed five tallies on 27 shots over two sessions and Mike Brodeur made 11 saves in the third for the Senators, who have scored seven goals during their six-game losing streak. The regulation loss was Ottawa's first in six road contests (2-1-3).
All three meetings between the clubs this season resulted in shutout victories by the road team, with Boston posting two.
