Carson Wentz was 6 for 10 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the visiting Miami Dolphins 38-31 on Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Miami's Jay Cutler was 5 of 8 passing for 105 yards and one touchdown, including a 72-yard completion to wide receiver DeVante Parker (two receptions, 78 yards).

Neither team was sharp in the first half, when the starters were in the game. But both teams were opportunistic, turning five first-half turnovers into 28 points -- 21 for Philadelphia.

The halftime score -- Philadelphia 28, Miami 24 -- was indicative of the wild first half that saw almost 500 yards of offense.

The first-half scoring was capped on a 56-yard field goal by Miami kicker Andrew Franks with two seconds left.

Philadelphia (2-1) took a 7-0 lead on Wentz's 50-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Torrey Smith that took advantage of an apparent coverage bust by Miami.

The Dolphins (1-2) tied the score at 7 on a 2-yard run by running back Jay Ajayi (nine carries, 53 yards, two touchdowns) that was set up by Cutler's deep throw to Parker.

The Eagles tied the game at 14 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Wentz to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (two receptions, 35 yards, one touchdown).

Philadelphia took a 28-21 lead when linebacker Mychal Kendricks returned a Matt Moore pass 31 yards for a touchdown.

Neither team played its starters in the second half.

Considering the high point total (69 points) and the bevy of turnovers (seven, four by Miami) both coaches -- Philadelphia's

Doug Pederson and Miami's Adam Gase -- likely emerge with things to build on and to correct.

Both starting quarterbacks seemed to perform reasonably well, but Miami backup quarterback Matt Moore was disappointing, going 5 of 11 for 43 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Pederson will be especially disappointed with his team's 16 penalties for 147 yards. Gase probably won't be happy with his first-team defense, which was shaky on the ground (60 rushing yards allowed in the first half) and the air.
