Backup running back Marcus Williams Jr. rushed for a season high for a second consecutive week as No. 21 Appalachian State wore down South Alabama 30-3 with a suffocating defense in Sun Belt Conference play Saturday afternoon in Mobile, Ala.

With leading rusher Darrynton Evans held to 46 yards, Williams ran for 94 yards and a touchdown as the Mountaineers (7-0, 4-0 Sun Belt) extended their winning streak to 13 games, second longest in program history. Williams ran for 79 yards last week against Louisiana-Monroe.

Freshman running back Raykwon Anderson added 99 yards on just four carries late in the game, scoring on a 67-yard run with 4:48 to go as the Mountaineers rushed for a season high for a second straight week with 313 yards.

Appalachian State's defense held the Jaguars (1-7, 0-4) to just 139 yards and blocked a field goal try before losing the shutout when Frankie Onate converted a 37-yarder to get the Jags on the board with 5:43 left in the game.

Running back Tra Minter rushed for 94 yards for South Alabama with 64 coming in the second half, but quarterbacks Cephus Johnson and Desmond Trotter were a combined 6 of 19 passing for 52 yards.

Quarterback Zac Thomas had an up-and-down day passing for the Mountaineers, completing 16 of 28 attempts for 132 yards and a touchdown.

The Mountaineers established their defensive dominance early. The Jaguars managed just three first downs in the first half with their first coming via a roughing-the-kicker penalty and their next two as time was running out in the second quarter.

The Jaguars finished the half netting only 23 yards on 14 plays.

The Mountaineers also had issues moving the ball consistently. They had 203 yards in total offense before halftime but had to settle for field goals on two drives inside South Alabama's 20-yard line, leading 13-0 at the break.
