Evans completed 22 of 29 passes for 267 yards and led the team with 67 yards on the ground as the Hokies erased a pair of 17-point deficits. Virginia Tech (8-3) scored the final 13 points of the game after trailing the Fighting Irish 31-21 to enter the fourth quarter.

Quarterback DeShone Kizer completed 16 of 33 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns for the Fighting Irish. Running back Josh Adams rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame (4-7) guaranteed a sub-.500 season for the first time since 2007. The Fighting Irish are not eligible to play in a bowl game for the first time since coach Brian Kelly took over in 2010.

A 23-yard field goal by Joey Slye pulled Virginia Tech within 31-24 with 13:35 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Hokies evened the score at 31-31 less than five minutes later when Evans lobbed a touchdown pass to tight end Bucky Hodges near the corner of the end zone.

Slye drilled a 20-yard field goal with 4:16 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Virginia Tech its first lead of the game. The Hokies' defense preserved the lead in the final minutes.

Virginia Tech earned its seventh win in its past eight road games. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Notre Dame jumped to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter after Kizer connected with wide receiver Chris Finke for a 31-yard touchdown. The fast start marked the 10th time in 11 games this season in which the Fighting Irish have scored first.

Evans rallied Virginia Tech to trim the deficit to 24-14 at halftime. The junior quarterback rushed for one touchdown and passed for another in the final 12 minutes of the first half.
