LUBBOCK, Texas -- Plenty of records fell or were tied Saturday night when Oklahoma and Texas Tech combined for one of the most prolific offensive games in NCAA history.

In the end, it was the No. 16 Sooners coming out ahead 66-59 in front of 60,478 at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The teams combined for an NCAA-record 1,708 yards -- 854 apiece.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 545 yards and seven touchdowns, running back Joe Mixon had 377 yards of total offense (263 rushing) and found the end zone five times (three receiving), and receiver Dede Westbrook had 202 receiving yards for his fourth consecutive big game.

Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was 52 of 88 passing for 734 yards, tying the record set in 2014 by Washington State's Connor Halliday. Mahomes, who threw five touchdown passes, fell one attempt shy of matching the FBS record set by Halliday in 2013.

Mahomes also rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns, setting an NCAA record for most yards by a player in a game with 819.

Texas Tech wide receiver Keke Coutee finished with 172 yards and a touchdown while fellow wideout Jonathan Giles had 167 and two scores.

The most important series may have occurred on the first possession of the second half after the Sooners took a 30-24 lead into halftime.

The Red Raiders got the ball and Oklahoma (5-2, 4-0 Big Ten) held Texas Tech (3-4, 1-3) to a three-and-out, forcing a punt.

It was the last drive that finished with anything other than a touchdown until the Sooners were able to run out the clock on the final drive.

Before many of the fans settled into their seats, Oklahoma put two touchdowns on the board.

The Sooners scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes, both on long scoring passes from former Red Raider Mayfield. The first came on the game's fifth play when Mixon hauled in a 56-yarder from Mayfield.

After Texas Tech fumbled on its first drive, quickly giving the ball back to the Sooners, Mayfield hit Westbrook for a 49-yard touchdown.

By halftime, Westbrook had six catches for 141 yards.

After Oklahoma's quick early barrage, the Texas Tech defense settled in and its offense found its footing.

The Red Raiders clawed away at the lead for the rest of the half before grabbing the lead for the first time at 24-23 on Jonathan Giles' 23-yard touchdown catch from Mahomes with 37 seconds left before halftime.

Westbrook hauled in a 52-yard pass on Oklahoma's first play of the next drive and then Mayfield hit walk-on Nick Basquine for a 23-yard touchdown a play later as the Sooners needed 20 seconds to tack on another score and take a 30-24 lead into the break.

Mahomes threw for 375 yards in the first half but the rest of Tech's touchdowns in the half came on the ground.

NOTES: Oklahoma WR Dede Westbrook's 49-yard first-quarter touchdown catch was his ninth in the past four games, tying him with Malcolm Kelly for the most touchdown catches over four games in Sooners history. ... Oklahoma was penalized on its first kickoff for having two players -- Curtis Bolton and Dahu Green -- wearing the same number. Green switched jerseys for the remainder of the game. ... Tech alum Gil Roberts, who won a gold medal in the 1,600-meter relay at the Rio Olympics, was honored on the field in the first quarter along with Olympic high jumper Bradley Akins. ...
