SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Nobody could catch Notre Dame tailback Josh Adams during his record-setting 98-yard touchdown run Saturday.

The true freshman proved equally as fast at handing off credit for the play, which marked the longest scoring run in Notre Dame history.

"That's pretty crazy," Adams said with a grin. "That just means this group of offensive linemen got the longest run in Notre Dame history."

Adams rushed for 141 yards and the TD as No. 4 Notre Dame cruised to a 28-7 win over Wake Forest on Saturday.

Quarterback DeShone Kizer tallied 111 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Notre Dame (9-1) earned its fifth consecutive win and finished 6-0 at home for the first time since 2012.

"It's always great to get a win for your seniors in their last home game," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "They certainly have left a great legacy here at Notre Dame."

Demon Deacons quarterback John Wolford passed for 219 yards and rushed for a TD. Tailback Tyler Bell rushed for 90 yards for Wake Forest (3-7), which lost its fourth consecutive game.

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said too many mistakes cost his team.

"We beat ourselves, and that is a theme with our football team this year," Clawson said. "This year, we're much more competitive in games (than last year). But against the better football teams, we don't find ways to win. We find ways to lose."

Adams' 98-yard scoring jaunt proved to be the turning point. Notre Dame was backed up at its own 2-yard line when he burst through the line of scrimmage and bounced right. He stiff-armed a defender and sprinted down the right sideline for the score.

The touchdown marked the longest play from scrimmage and the longest scoring run in Notre Dame history, as well as the longest play from scrimmage by any player in the nation this season. Notre Dame's previous record for longest TD run stood since 1947, when Bob Livingstone scored from 92 yards against USC.

Kelly praised the rapid development of Adams, who started his first career game in place of injured teammate C.J. Prosise.

"The run was one (for) the highlight reel: Physical, explosive, sheds off a tackler," Kelly said. "Obviously, it was a big part of the game where we're backed up, and just a terrific run."

Wake Forest trailed 21-0 at halftime before slicing the deficit to 21-7 on a 1-yard run by Wolford with 2:40 to go in the third quarter. The TD followed a 19-yard completion from Wolford to wide receiver Tabari Hines, who made a diving catch near the goal line.

Notre Dame pulled ahead 28-7 on a 5-yard run by Kizer with 10:58 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound sophomore sprinted left for his second rushing score of the game and his eighth of the season.

Wake Forest limited star Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller to three catches for 37 yards. Kizer's longest pass went for 22 yards.

"A big part of our game plan was that we did not want Fuller to beat us," Clawson said. "We were going to roll coverage to him and not let him get over our heads."

Kizer gave Notre Dame a 7-0 lead on a 12-yard run with 3:41 to go in the first quarter.

Notre Dame increased its lead to 14-0 on a defensive touchdown less than a minute later. Defensive tackle Sheldon Day pressured Wolford, who hurried his throw and had the ball slip out of his hand. Defensive end Andrew Trumbetti intercepted the pass and rumbled 28 yards to the end zone.

Adams made it 21-0 with his 98-yard run with 9:59 remaining in the second quarter.

Notre Dame defensive end Romeo Okwara finished with three sacks and a forced fumble. The Fighting Irish defense held Wake Forest to 0-for-3 on fourth down.

"Undefeated at home this year -- that's a huge accomplishment," Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith said with a smile.
