No. 7 Ohio State 42, Michigan 28: J.T. Barrett threw for 176 yards and a touchdown and added 89 yards and two scores on the ground before leaving with an injury as the host Buckeyes knocked off the rival Wolverines.

Barrett went 13-of-21 but was hit hard seconds into the fourth quarter and had his right knee bend underneath him before being carted off the field with an inflatable cast around the leg. Ezekiel Elliott added 121 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as Ohio State (11-1, 8-0 Big Ten) kept its chances at a playoff spot alive and pushed its record Big Ten winning streak to 24 straight.

Devin Gardner completed 22-of-32 for 233 yards and two TDs while Drake Johnson ran for a pair of scores for Michigan (5-7, 3-5), which failed to gain bowl eligibility. Devin Funchess made seven catches for 108 yards and Jake Butt hauled in a TD for the Wolverines, who lost their third straight in the series amid question about head coach Brady Hoke’s job security.

Barrett and Johnson traded rushing scores on the first two drives of the third quarter before Barrett went 4-of-5 and ran for 16 yards to put the Buckeyes in position for Elliott’s go-ahead 2-yard TD with 1:08 left in the third. Barrett was injured on the next series but Elliott broke for a 44-yard score with 4:58 left and Joey Bosa sacked Gardner and forced a fumble that Darron Lee returned 33 yards for the clinching score one minute later.

Gardner had his first pass attempt of the afternoon picked off and Barrett turned it into a 6-yard TD pass to Nick Vannett before Gardner countered later in the first quarter with a 12-yard TD pass to Butt. Gardner put together a 95-yard, 15-play drive capped by Johnson’s 2-yard score, but Barrett broke through the middle for a 25-yard rushing score just in front of the half to knot it at 14 at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Barrett (45) broke Drew Brees’ (42, 1998) Big Ten record for total TDs in a single season. … Ohio State is 12-3 in the series since 2000. … The Buckeyes are the first team in Big Ten history to go through three straight regular seasons without a loss or a tie in conference play and will take on Wisconsin or Minnesota in the Big Ten Championship game next week.
