No. 7 Notre Dame 49, Navy 39:
Everett Golson threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more to
lead the Irish to a wild win over the Midshipmen at FedEx Field in
Landover, Md.
Golson was 18-of-25 for 315 yards
and rushed nine times for 33 yards for Notre Dame (7-1), which racked
up 533 yards of total offense. Tarean Folston rushed 20 times for 149
yards and a score, while Chris Brown had two receptions for 82 yards
and C.J. Prosise had two catches for 77 yards and a score.
Keenan Reynolds passed for 118
yards and two touchdowns for Navy (4-5), which was 3-of-5 on
fourth-down conversion attempts. Noah Copeland rushed 16 times for
138 yards while Chris Swain scored both a rushing and receiving
touchdown for the Midshipmen.
The Irish looked like they'd make
it a blowout early on, scoring on a 78-yard pass from Golson to
Prosise on the second play from scrimmage of the game, then adding
three more scores — two Golson touchdown passes and a Golson
scoring run — in the first 23 minutes of the game to take a 28-7
lead. But the Midshipmen had two scores in the final 2:30 of the
first half, with Brown scoring on an 18-yard run and Austin Grebe
hitting a 44-yard field goal on the last play before halftime to cut
the lead to 28-17.
Geoffrey Whiteside ran 13 yards
for a score to cut the deficit to four with 7:29 to go in the third,
and just over three minutes later, Navy took the lead on Swain's
4-yard scoring scamper. But the Irish responded with a pair of scores
on runs by Golson and Folston, then held off a rally by the
Midshipmen — who pulled within three on Swain's touchdown catch
with just over four minutes to play — with Golson going in from 8
yards out with 1:27 to play to clinch the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Golson has thrown
an interception in five straight games. … Notre Dame's leading
tackler, Joe Schmidt, went out of the game in the third quarter with
a leg injury and didn't return. … Notre Dame now leads the all-time
series 75-12-1.
