Virginia 23, Louisville 21: Ian Frye converted three field goals, including the game-winner with 3:42 remaining, as the host Cavaliers ended an 11-game losing streak against FBS competition by upsetting the Cardinals.

Louisville (2-1, 1-1 ACC) overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Dominique Brown and 4-yard scoring strike from Will Gardner to James Quick. The Cardinals forced Virginia to punt on the ensuing possession, but Quick muffed Alec Vozenilek’s punt and Frye put the Cavaliers ahead for good with a 42-yard kick.

Greyson Lambert threw for 162 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, including a 15-yard pass to Miles Gooch to spark a run of 20 unanswered points by Virginia (2-1, 1-0). Gardner threw for 164 yards and a pair of scores with two interceptions while Brown paced the Cardinals with 74 yards rushing.

Louisville jumped ahead on its opening possession, capping off a nine-play, 75-yard march with Gardner’s 9-yard play-action pass to Charles Standberry. Virginia’s defense forced a punt after a fumble on the ensuing drive and Lambert knotted it with 23 seconds left in the opening stanza when Gooch reached over cornerback Andrew Johnson to come down with a lob from Lambert.

Frye hit a 35-yard field goal right before halftime to send the Cavaliers into the break with a lead and followed Lambert’s 10-yard TD run on the first possession of the third quarter with a 47-yard kick late in the stanza. But the Cardinals, who had been held to 195 total yards through three quarters, strung together touchdown drives of 56 and 52 yards on consecutive possessions to set the stage for the late-game drama.
