Everett Golson threw three touchdown passes and the Fighting Irish defense forced four turnovers as host Notre Dame ended this chapter of its series with the rival Wolverines with a flourish.

Golson finished 23-of-34 for 226 yards while William Fuller caught nine passes for 89 yards and a score for Notre Dame (2-0). Amir Carlisle had seven catches for 61 yards and two TDs as the Irish gave up 289 total yards en route to shutting out the Wolverines for the first time in 42 all-time meetings.

Devin Gardner was 19-of-32 for 189 yards and three interceptions while also losing a fumble as the Wolverines (1-1) were blanked for the first time in 376 games spanning 30 years. Devin Funchess was the lone bright spot for Michigan, hauling in nine passes for 107 yards, but he suffered a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter.

Cam McDaniel capped a 71-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge late in the first quarter to give Notre Dame a 7-0 lead, and Golson threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second – a 1-yard toss to Carlisle and a 24-yard strike to Fuller — for a 21-0 halftime advantage. Golson and Carlisle hooked up for a 12-yard score in the third quarter, and Kyle Brindza added a 43-yard field goal in the fourth.

After completing nine of his first 10 passes, Gardner missed on his next six - including an interception. The Wolverines drove to the Notre Dame 22 in the fourth quarter, but Kolin Hill sacked Gardner for an 11-yard loss on fourth-and-10 to preserve the shutout.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan's last shutout was a 26-0 loss to Iowa on Oct. 20, 1984. The 376-game streak without being blanked is an FBS record. … Michigan has committed 20 turnovers in its last six games at Notre Dame, including 10 in the last two. … The Irish improved to 15-0 under coach Brian Kelly when they do not commit a turnover.
